Mount Lassen and Sequoia Kings National Parks
Sept, 2006
It's been a few months since the last update of
this website so you are getting twice your moneys worth. For labor day
weekend Tara and I went to Sequoia Kings National Parks for a couple of
days. Following that two weeks later we went to Lassen National Park.
Sequoia Kings is about a 5 hour drive and we got
a late start on Friday since we couldn't leave until Tara got off of work.
We lucked out and got a campsite around 11pm and set up camp. For the
weekend we just did some small hikes and got to see some cool stuff. The
General Sherman tree is here and is the largest living thing on earth.
It's a pretty impressive Giant Redwood but unfortunately we lost the
couple of pictures we took of that big boy. We hiked out on
Moro Rock,
which is a large granite rock jutting out over drop-offs of several
thousand of feet.
Lassen National Park is located in northern
California about 3 hrs from our house. It's a dormant volcano and erupted
back in 1914 blowing half of the mountain away. That was the largest, most
recent volcano eruption in North America until Mt. St. Helens erupted in
the 1980's. Mount Lassen is a great national park and would be our
favorite, if it were not for Yosemite. While at Lassen we did a lot of
hiking to waterfalls, geothermal areas, and the big hike to the top of
Mount Lassen, 5 miles round trip and over 2000 feet of elevation gain. The
top of Mount Lassen is around 10,500 feet and has unbelievable views that
reach as far as across the valley floor and over to the coastal mountain
range along the Pacific ocean. You can also see Mount Shasta at the top.
